CPR Brass Steam Locomotive

Bell #940

This locomotive was built by ALCO - The Locomotive & Machine Company of Montreal, later Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW), Montreal, Quebec, September 1911. Its builder's plate number was 50253. CP940 was originally built as number CP2740. It entered CPR service as a brand new locomotive on that date (September 1911). CP2740 was changed September 1912: - CP2740 was renumbered to CP940. This locomotive left CPR service and went to Quebec Central Railway Company (QCR) as number 57, November 1920. Locomotive QCR 57 returned to CPR service from Quebec Central Railway Company as CP940, sometime during 1936. It was scrapped September 1955 after exactly 44 years of service. Locomotive CP940 was of class D10g.

CPR stamped every bell with the locomotive number on which it was installed. One can often observe the renumbering history of locomotives reflected on the bell. In this case this bell has a very ambiguous number. It is clearly numbered 1940. However, CPR never ran a steam locomotive with that number. From the photo, there seems to be something odd about the number 1. It almost looks like it was stamped at a different time; visually the number 1 seems slightly larger and bolder. CP 940 spent much of its operating years on the Quebec Central Railway. Perhaps the stamping of the number 1 had something to do with that bit of its history. Unfortunately I do not have any additional information and I can only speculate.

No photo available of CPR #940.  Two CPR sister locomotives shown: #939 & #941.

Bell includes yoke (mounting hardware) and clapper.  This bell was purchased directly from Canadian Pacific Railway in 1976.

Bell dimensions: 12" high & 16" diameter at the rim. Bell will be shipped in original wooden crate as delivered by CPR in the 1970's. Second box will contain the yoke assembly, photos of locomotive (if available), history sheet together with an assembly DVD. . Please contact for shipping estimate. Extra charges for customs will apply if a US buyer.

Please note that these bells have been lightly polished but most may have some nicks etc. due to decades of use especially around the bottom rims of the bells.
